وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِۦ نَفْسُهُۥ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ ٱلْوَرِيدِ إِذْ يَتَلَقَّى ٱلْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌ مَّا يَلْفِظُ مِن قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌ وَجَآءَتْ سَكْرَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنتَ مِنْهُ تَحِيدُ وَنُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْوَعِيدِ وَجَآءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّعَهَا سَآئِقٌ وَشَهِيدٌ لَّقَدْ كُنتَ فِى غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هَٰذَا فَكَشَفْنَا عَنكَ غِطَآءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ حَدِيدٌ وَقَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ هَٰذَا مَا لَدَىَّ عَتِيدٌ أَلْقِيَا فِى جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ مُّرِيبٍ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَأَلْقِيَاهُ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلشَّدِيدِ ۞ قَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ رَبَّنَا مَآ أَطْغَيْتُهُۥ وَلَٰكِن كَانَ فِى ضَلَٰلٍۭ بَعِيدٍ قَالَ لَا تَخْتَصِمُوا۟ لَدَىَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْكُم بِٱلْوَعِيدِ مَا يُبَدَّلُ ٱلْقَوْلُ لَدَىَّ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِظَلَّٰمٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ يَوْمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمْتَلَأْتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلْ مِن مَّزِيدٍ وَأُزْلِفَتِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ هَٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِكُلِّ أَوَّابٍ حَفِيظٍ مَّنْ خَشِىَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَجَآءَ بِقَلْبٍ مُّنِيبٍ ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَٰمٍ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُلُودِ لَهُم مَّا يَشَآءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌ

Tafsir of Surah Qaaf (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

English Translation

And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein

English Transliteration

Walaqad khalaqna alinsana wanaAAlamu ma tuwaswisu bihi nafsuhu wanahnu aqrabu ilayhi min habli alwareedi

It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein.

English Translation

When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left.

English Transliteration

Ith yatalaqqa almutalaqqiyani AAani alyameeni waAAani alshshimali qaAAeedun

Behold, two (guardian angels) appointed to learn (his doings) learn (and noted them), one sitting on the right and one on the left.

English Translation

Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].

English Transliteration

Ma yalfithu min qawlin illa ladayhi raqeebun AAateedun

Not a word does he utter but there is a sentinel by him, ready (to note it).

English Translation

And the intoxication of death will bring the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid.

English Transliteration

Wajaat sakratu almawti bialhaqqi thalika ma kunta minhu taheedu

And the stupor of death will bring Truth (before his eyes): "This was the thing which thou wast trying to escape!"

English Translation

And the Horn will be blown. That is the Day of [carrying out] the threat.

English Transliteration

Wanufikha fee alssoori thalika yawmu alwaAAeedi

And the Trumpet shall be blown: that will be the Day whereof Warning (had been given).

English Translation

And every soul will come, with it a driver and a witness.

English Transliteration

Wajaat kullu nafsin maAAaha saiqun washaheedun

And there will come forth every soul: with each will be an (angel) to drive, and an (angel) to bear witness.

English Translation

[It will be said], "You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your cover, so your sight, this Day, is sharp."

English Transliteration

Laqad kunta fee ghaflatin min hatha fakashafna AAanka ghitaaka fabasaruka alyawma hadeedun

(It will be said:) "Thou wast heedless of this; now have We removed thy veil, and sharp is thy sight this Day!"

English Translation

And his companion, [the angel], will say, "This [record] is what is with me, prepared."

English Transliteration

Waqala qareenuhu hatha ma ladayya AAateedun

And his Companion will say: "Here is (his Record) ready with me!"

English Translation

[Allah will say], "Throw into Hell every obstinate disbeliever,

English Transliteration

Alqiya fee jahannama kulla kaffarin AAaneedin

(The sentence will be:) "Throw, throw into Hell every contumacious Rejecter (of Allah)!-

English Translation

Preventer of good, aggressor, and doubter,

English Transliteration

MannaAAin lilkhayri muAAtadin mureebin

"Who forbade what was good, transgressed all bounds, cast doubts and suspicions;

English Translation

Who made [as equal] with Allah another deity; then throw him into the severe punishment."

English Transliteration

Allathee jaAAala maAAa Allahi ilahan akhara faalqiyahu fee alAAathabi alshshadeedi

"Who set up another god beside Allah: Throw him into a severe penalty."

English Translation

His [devil] companion will say, "Our Lord, I did not make him transgress, but he [himself] was in extreme error."

English Transliteration

Qala qareenuhu rabbana ma atghaytuhu walakin kana fee dalalin baAAeedin

His Companion will say: "Our Lord! I did not make him transgress, but he was (himself) far astray."

English Translation

[Allah] will say, "Do not dispute before Me, while I had already presented to you the warning.

English Transliteration

Qala la takhtasimoo ladayya waqad qaddamtu ilaykum bialwaAAeedi

He will say: "Dispute not with each other in My Presence: I had already in advance sent you Warning.

English Translation

The word will not be changed with Me, and never will I be unjust to the servants."

English Transliteration

Ma yubaddalu alqawlu ladayya wama ana bithallamin lilAAabeedi

"The Word changes not before Me, and I do not the least injustice to My Servants."

English Translation

On the Day We will say to Hell, "Have you been filled?" and it will say, "Are there some more,"

English Transliteration

Yawma naqoolu lijahannama hali imtalati wataqoolu hal min mazeedin

One Day We will ask Hell, "Art thou filled to the full?" It will say, "Are there any more (to come)?"

English Translation

And Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far,

English Transliteration

Waozlifati aljannatu lilmuttaqeena ghayra baAAeedin

And the Garden will be brought nigh to the Righteous,- no more a thing distant.

English Translation

[It will be said], "This is what you were promised - for every returner [to Allah] and keeper [of His covenant]

English Transliteration

Hatha ma tooAAadoona likulli awwabin hafeethin

(A voice will say:) "This is what was promised for you,- for every one who turned (to Allah) in sincere repentance, who kept (His Law),

English Translation

Who feared the Most Merciful unseen and came with a heart returning [in repentance].

English Transliteration

Man khashiya alrrahmana bialghaybi wajaa biqalbin muneebin

"Who feared (Allah) Most Gracious Unseen, and brought a heart turned in devotion (to Him):

English Translation

Enter it in peace. This is the Day of Eternity."

English Transliteration

Odkhulooha bisalamin thalika yawmu alkhuloodi

"Enter ye therein in Peace and Security; this is a Day of Eternal Life!"

English Translation

They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.

English Transliteration

Lahum ma yashaoona feeha waladayna mazeedun

There will be for them therein all that they wish,- and more besides in Our Presence.
