لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ

Tafsir of Surah Al-Balad (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

English Translation

I swear by this city, Makkah -

English Transliteration

La oqsimu bihatha albaladi

I do call to witness this City;-

English Translation

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -

English Transliteration

Waanta hillun bihatha albaladi

And thou art a freeman of this City;-

English Translation

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

English Transliteration

Wawalidin wama walada

And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-

English Translation

We have certainly created man into hardship.

English Transliteration

Laqad khalaqna alinsana fee kabadin

Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.

English Translation

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

English Transliteration

Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahadun

Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?

English Translation

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

English Transliteration

Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubadan

He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!

English Translation

Does he think that no one has seen him?

English Transliteration

Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahadun

Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?

English Translation

Have We not made for him two eyes?

English Transliteration

Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayni

Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?-

English Translation

And a tongue and two lips?

English Transliteration

Walisanan washafatayni

And a tongue, and a pair of lips?-

English Translation

And have shown him the two ways?

English Transliteration

Wahadaynahu alnnajdayni

And shown him the two highways?

English Translation

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.

English Transliteration

Fala iqtahama alAAaqabata

But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.

English Translation

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?

English Transliteration

Wama adraka ma alAAaqabatu

And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-

English Translation

It is the freeing of a slave

English Transliteration

Fakku raqabatin

(It is:) freeing the bondman;

English Translation

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

English Transliteration

Aw itAAamun fee yawmin thee masghabatin

Or the giving of food in a day of privation

English Translation

An orphan of near relationship

English Transliteration

Yateeman tha maqrabatin

To the orphan with claims of relationship,

English Translation

Or a needy person in misery

English Transliteration

Aw miskeenan tha matrabatin

Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.

English Translation

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

English Transliteration

Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoo watawasaw bialssabri watawasaw bialmarhamati

Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.

English Translation

Those are the companions of the right.

English Transliteration

Olaika ashabu almaymanati

Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.

English Translation

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.

English Transliteration

Waallatheena kafaroo biayatina hum ashabu almashamati

But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.

English Translation

Over them will be fire closed in.

English Transliteration

AAalayhim narun musadatun

On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).
