Information About Surah An-Najm

Surah An-Najm

Surah An-Najm is the 53rd chapter of the Quran and consists of 62 verses. The title of the surah, An-Najm, translates to "The Star" in English. This surah is a Meccan surah, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during his time in Mecca.

The surah begins with a powerful declaration about the truthfulness of the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) message, stating that he does not speak from his own desires but conveys a revelation from Allah. The surah then describes the incident of the Prophet's miraculous journey, known as Isra and Mi'raj, where he ascended to the heavens and received divine revelations.

Surah An-Najm emphasizes the importance of submitting to Allah and following His guidance. It warns against associating partners with Allah and encourages the believers to worship and prostrate to Him. The surah also addresses the disbelievers, cautioning them about the consequences of rejecting the truth and persisting in their disbelief.

The surah concludes with a reminder of the Day of Judgment, when every individual will be held accountable for their deeds. It emphasizes that each person will reap the consequences of their actions, whether good or bad, and that no intercessors will have the power to change the divine decree.

Overall, Surah An-Najm serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of faith, obedience to Allah, and the inevitability of the Day of Judgment. It encourages believers to remain steadfast in their faith and warns against the pitfalls of disbelief and disobedience.

Tafsir of Surah An-Najm (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

English Translation

By the star when it descends,

English Transliteration

Waalnnajmi itha hawa

By the Star when it goes down,-

English Translation

Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,

English Transliteration

Ma dalla sahibukum wama ghawa

Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled.

English Translation

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.

English Transliteration

Wama yantiqu AAani alhawa

Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire.

English Translation

It is not but a revelation revealed,

English Transliteration

In huwa illa wahyun yooha

It is no less than inspiration sent down to him:

English Translation

Taught to him by one intense in strength -

English Transliteration

AAallamahu shadeedu alquwa

He was taught by one Mighty in Power,

English Translation

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

English Transliteration

Thoo mirratin faistawa

Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form);

English Translation

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.

English Transliteration

Wahuwa bialofuqi alaAAla

While he was in the highest part of the horizon:

English Translation

Then he approached and descended

English Transliteration

Thumma dana fatadalla

Then he approached and came closer,

English Translation

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.

English Transliteration

Fakana qaba qawsayni aw adna

And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer;

English Translation

And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed.

English Transliteration

Faawha ila AAabdihi ma awha

So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey.

English Translation

The heart did not lie [about] what it saw.

English Transliteration

Ma kathaba alfuadu ma raa

The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw.

English Translation

So will you dispute with him over what he saw?

English Transliteration

Afatumaroonahu AAala ma yara

Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw?

English Translation

And he certainly saw him in another descent

English Transliteration

Walaqad raahu nazlatan okhra

For indeed he saw him at a second descent,

English Translation

At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -

English Transliteration

AAinda sidrati almuntaha

Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass:

English Translation

Near it is the Garden of Refuge -

English Transliteration

AAindaha jannatu almawa

Near it is the Garden of Abode.

English Translation

When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].

English Transliteration

Ith yaghsha alssidrata ma yaghsha

Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!)

English Translation

The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].

English Transliteration

Ma zagha albasaru wama tagha

(His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong!

English Translation

He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.

English Transliteration

Laqad raa min ayati rabbihi alkubra

For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest!

English Translation

So have you considered al-Lat and al-\'Uzza?

English Transliteration

Afaraaytumu allata waalAAuzza

Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza,

English Translation

And Manat, the third - the other one?

English Transliteration

Wamanata alththalithata alokhra

And another, the third (goddess), Manat?

English Translation

Is the male for you and for Him the female?

English Transliteration

Alakumu alththakaru walahu alontha

What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female?

English Translation

That, then, is an unjust division.

English Transliteration

Tilka ithan qismatun deeza

Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair!

English Translation

They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.

English Transliteration

In hiya illa asmaon sammaytumooha antum waabaokum ma anzala Allahu biha min sultanin in yattabiAAoona illa alththanna wama tahwa alanfusu walaqad jaahum min rabbihimu alhuda

These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord!

English Translation

Or is there for man whatever he wishes?

English Transliteration

Am lilinsani ma tamanna

Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after?

English Translation

Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].

English Transliteration

Falillahi alakhiratu waaloola

But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong.

English Translation

And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.

English Transliteration

Wakam min malakin fee alssamawati la tughnee shafaAAatuhum shayan illa min baAAdi an yathana Allahu liman yashao wayarda

How many-so-ever be the angels in the heavens, their intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he is acceptable to Him.
