إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْ ﴿1﴾ وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ ﴿2﴾ وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ ﴿3﴾ وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ ﴿4﴾ وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ ﴿5﴾ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ ﴿6﴾ فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ ﴿7﴾ فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ﴿8﴾ وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا ﴿9﴾ وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهْرِهِۦ ﴿10﴾ فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًا ﴿11﴾ وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا ﴿12﴾ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِىٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا ﴿13﴾ إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ ﴿14﴾ بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرًا ﴿15﴾ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ ﴿16﴾ وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ﴿17﴾ وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ ﴿18﴾ لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ ﴿19﴾ فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿20﴾ وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩ ﴿21﴾ بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُكَذِّبُونَ ﴿22﴾ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ ﴿23﴾ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ﴿24﴾ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۭ ﴿25﴾

Tafsir of Surah Al-Inshiqaaq (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

When the sky has split [open] (1)

English Transliteration

Itha alssamao inshaqqat (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

When heaven is rent asunder (1)

وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] (2)

English Transliteration

Waathinat lirabbiha wahuqqat (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

and gives ear to its Lord, and is fitly disposed; (2)

وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

And when the earth has been extended (3)

English Transliteration

Waitha alardu muddat (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

when earth is stretched out (3)

وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

And has cast out that within it and relinquished [it] (4)

English Transliteration

Waalqat ma feeha watakhallat (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

and casts forth what is in it, and voids itself, (4)

وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] - (5)

English Transliteration

Waathinat lirabbiha wahuqqat (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

and gives ear to its Lord, and is fitly disposed! (5)

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it. (6)

English Transliteration

Ya ayyuha alinsanu innaka kadihun ila rabbika kadhan famulaqeehi (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

O Man! Thou art labouring unto thy Lord laboriously, and thou shalt encounter Him. (6)

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand, (7)

English Transliteration

Faama man ootiya kitabahu biyameenihi (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

Then as for him who is given his book in his right hand, (7)

فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ﴿8﴾

English Translation

He will be judged with an easy account (8)

English Transliteration

Fasawfa yuhasabu hisaban yaseeran (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

he shall surely receive an easy reckoning (8)

وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا ﴿9﴾

English Translation

And return to his people in happiness. (9)

English Transliteration

Wayanqalibu ila ahlihi masrooran (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

and he will return to his family joyfully. (9)

وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهْرِهِۦ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

But as for he who is given his record behind his back, (10)

English Transliteration

Waamma man ootiya kitabahu waraa thahrihi (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

But as for him who is given his book behind his back, (10)

فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًا ﴿11﴾

English Translation

He will cry out for destruction (11)

English Transliteration

Fasawfa yadAAoo thubooran (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

he shall call for destruction (11)

وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا ﴿12﴾

English Translation

And [enter to] burn in a Blaze. (12)

English Transliteration

Wayasla saAAeeran (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

and he shall roast at a Blaze. (12)

إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِىٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا ﴿13﴾

English Translation

Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness; (13)

English Transliteration

Innahu kana fee ahlihi masrooran (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

He once lived among his family joyfully; (13)

إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allah]. (14)

English Transliteration

Innahu thanna an lan yahoora (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

he surely thought he would never revert. (14)

بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرًا ﴿15﴾

English Translation

But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever of him, Seeing. (15)

English Transliteration

Bala inna rabbahu kana bihi baseeran (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

Yes indeed; his Lord had sight of him. (15)

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

So I swear by the twilight glow (16)

English Transliteration

Fala oqsimu bialshshafaqi (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

No! I swear by the twilight (16)

وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

And [by] the night and what it envelops (17)

English Transliteration

Waallayli wama wasaqa (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

and the night and what it envelops (17)

وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

And [by] the moon when it becomes full (18)

English Transliteration

Waalqamari itha ittasaqa (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

and the moon when it is at the full, (18)

لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

[That] you will surely experience state after state. (19)

English Transliteration

Latarkabunna tabaqan AAan tabaqin (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

you shall surely ride stage after stage. (19)

فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿20﴾

English Translation

So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe, (20)

English Transliteration

Fama lahum la yuminoona (20)

Tafsir of Verse 20

Then what ails them, that they believe not, (20)

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩ ﴿21﴾

English Translation

And when the Qur\'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allah]? (21)

English Transliteration

Waitha quria AAalayhimu alquranu la yasjudoona (21)

Tafsir of Verse 21

and when the Koran is recited to them they do not bow? (21)

بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُكَذِّبُونَ ﴿22﴾

English Translation

But those who have disbelieved deny, (22)

English Transliteration

Bali allatheena kafaroo yukaththiboona (22)

Tafsir of Verse 22

Nay, but the unbelievers are crying lies, (22)

وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ ﴿23﴾

English Translation

And Allah is most knowing of what they keep within themselves. (23)

English Transliteration

WaAllahu aAAlamu bima yooAAoona (23)

Tafsir of Verse 23

and God knows very well what they are secreting. (23)

فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ﴿24﴾

English Translation

So give them tidings of a painful punishment, (24)

English Transliteration

Fabashshirhum biAAathabin aleemin (24)

Tafsir of Verse 24

So give them good tidings of a painful chastisement, (24)

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۭ ﴿25﴾

English Translation

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted. (25)

English Transliteration

Illa allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lahum ajrun ghayru mamnoonin (25)

Tafsir of Verse 25

except those that believe, and do righteous deeds -- theirs shall be a wage unfailing. (25)
