(The Prophet) frowned and turned away, (1)

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. (2)

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified (3)

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka (3)

But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- (3)

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? (4)
English Transliteration
Aw yathth akkaru fatanfaAAahu al thth ikra (4)

Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? (4)

As for he who thinks himself without need, (5)
English Transliteration
Amma mani istaghna (5)

As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, (5)

To him you give attention. (6)

Faanta lahu tas adda (6)

To him dost thou attend; (6)

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. (7)

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka (7)

Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). (7)

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] (8)
English Transliteration
Waamma man ja aka yasAAa (8)

But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, (8)

While he fears [Allah], (9)
English Transliteration
Wahuwa yakhsha (9)

And with fear (in his heart), (9)

From him you are distracted. (10)

Faanta AAanhu talahha (10)

Of him wast thou unmindful. (10)
English Translation
No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; (11)

Kalla innaha tath kiratun (11)

By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: (11)

So whoever wills may remember it. (12)

Exalted and purified, (14)

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, (15)

Noble and dutiful. (16)

Kira min bararatin (16)

Honourable and Pious and Just. (16)

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. (17)

Qutila alinsa nu ma akfarahu (17)

Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; (17)

From what substance did He create him? (18)

Min ayyi shayin khalaqahu (18)

From what stuff hath He created him? (18)

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; (19)
English Transliteration
Min nut fatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu (19)

From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; (19)

Then He eased the way for him; (20)

Thumma al ssabeela yassarahu (20)

Then doth He make His path smooth for him; (20)

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. (21)

Thumma ama tahu faaqbarahu (21)

Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; (21)

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. (22)

Thumma itha sha a ansharahu (22)

Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). (22)

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. (23)

Kalla lamma yaqd i ma amarahu (23)

By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. (23)

Then let mankind look at his food - (24)
English Transliteration
Falyanth uri alinsa nu ila t aAAa mihi (24)

Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): (24)

How We poured down water in torrents, (25)
English Transliteration
Anna s ababna alma a s abba n (25)

For that We pour forth water in abundance, (25)

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], (26)
English Transliteration
Thumma shaqaqna alard a shaqqa n (26)

And We split the earth in fragments, (26)

And caused to grow within it grain (27)

Faanbatna feeha h abba n (27)

And produce therein corn, (27)

And grapes and herbage (28)

WaAAinaban waqad ba n (28)

And Grapes and nutritious plants, (28)

And olive and palm trees (29)

Wazaytoonan wanakhla n (29)

And Olives and Dates, (29)

And gardens of dense shrubbery (30)

Wah ada iqa ghulba n (30)

And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, (30)

And fruit and grass - (31)
English Transliteration
Wafa kihatan waabba n (31)

And fruits and fodder,- (31)

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. (32)
English Transliteration
Mata AAan lakum walianAAa mikum (32)

For use and convenience to you and your cattle. (32)

But when there comes the Deafening Blast (33)

Faitha ja ati al ssa khkhatu (33)

At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- (33)

On the Day a man will flee from his brother (34)

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi (34)

That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, (34)

And his mother and his father (35)

Waommihi waabeehi (35)

And his wife and his children, (36)

Wasah ibatihi wabaneehi (36)

And from his wife and his children. (36)

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. (37)

Likulli imriin minhum yawmaith in shanun yughneehi (37)

Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. (37)

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - (38)
English Transliteration
Wujoohun yawmaith in musfiratun (38)

Some faces that Day will be beaming, (38)

Laughing, rejoicing at good news. (39)
English Transliteration
Dah ikatun mustabshiratun (39)

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. (40)

Wawujoohun yawmaith in AAalayha ghabaratun (40)

And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, (40)

Blackness will cover them. (41)

Tarhaquha qataratun (41)

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. (42)

Ola ika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu (42)
