Information About Surah Abasa

Surah Abasa

Surah Abasa is the 80th chapter of the Quran and is composed of 42 verses. It is a Meccan surah, revealed during the early years of Prophet Muhammad's mission. The title "Abasa" translates to "He frowned" and is derived from the first word of the surah.

The surah addresses an incident where the Prophet Muhammad was engaged in a conversation with a prominent leader of the Quraysh, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, who was blind. During their conversation, a needy person approached the Prophet, seeking guidance. However, the Prophet's attention was momentarily diverted, and he frowned at the interruption. This incident prompted the revelation of Surah Abasa.

The surah serves as a reminder to the Prophet and all believers about the importance of showing kindness and compassion to others, regardless of their social status or circumstances. It emphasizes the value of prioritizing the needs of others and treating everyone with respect and dignity.

Surah Abasa also highlights the concept of guidance and accountability. It emphasizes that individuals are responsible for their own actions and choices, and that the Quran serves as a source of guidance for those who seek it. The surah warns against neglecting the message of the Quran and failing to recognize its significance.

Furthermore, Surah Abasa emphasizes the power and authority of Allah, who is the ultimate judge and sustainer of all creation. It underscores the concept of divine justice and the eventual accountability of all individuals before Allah.

Overall, Surah Abasa serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of humility, compassion, and attentiveness to the needs of others. It encourages believers to embody these virtues in their interactions with fellow human beings and to seek guidance and wisdom from the Quran.

English Translation

The Prophet frowned and turned away

English Transliteration

AAabasa watawalla

(The Prophet) frowned and turned away,

English Translation

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

English Transliteration

An jaahu alaAAma

Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting).

English Translation

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

English Transliteration

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?-

English Translation

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

English Transliteration

Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra

Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?

English Translation

As for he who thinks himself without need,

English Transliteration

Amma mani istaghna

As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient,

English Translation

To him you give attention.

English Transliteration

Faanta lahu tasadda

To him dost thou attend;

English Translation

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

English Transliteration

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding).

English Translation

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

English Transliteration

Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly,

English Translation

While he fears [Allah],

English Transliteration

Wahuwa yakhsha

And with fear (in his heart),

English Translation

From him you are distracted.

English Transliteration

Faanta AAanhu talahha

Of him wast thou unmindful.

English Translation

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;

English Transliteration

Kalla innaha tathkiratun

By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:

English Translation

So whoever wills may remember it.

English Transliteration

Faman shaa thakarahu

Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance.

English Translation

[It is recorded] in honored sheets,

English Transliteration

Fee suhufin mukarramatin

(It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour,

English Translation

Exalted and purified,

English Transliteration

MarfooAAatin mutahharatin

Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy,

English Translation

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

English Transliteration

Biaydee safaratin

(Written) by the hands of scribes-

English Translation

Noble and dutiful.

English Transliteration

Kiramin bararatin

Honourable and Pious and Just.

English Translation

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.

English Transliteration

Qutila alinsanu ma akfarahu

Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah;

English Translation

From what substance did He create him?

English Transliteration

Min ayyi shayin khalaqahu

From what stuff hath He created him?

English Translation

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

English Transliteration

Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions;

English Translation

Then He eased the way for him;

English Transliteration

Thumma alssabeela yassarahu

Then doth He make His path smooth for him;

English Translation

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

English Transliteration

Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu

Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave;

English Translation

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

English Transliteration

Thumma itha shaa ansharahu

Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again).

English Translation

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

English Transliteration

Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu

By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him.

English Translation

Then let mankind look at his food -

English Transliteration

Falyanthuri alinsanu ila taAAamihi

Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it):

English Translation

How We poured down water in torrents,

English Transliteration

Anna sababna almaa sabban

For that We pour forth water in abundance,

English Translation

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

English Transliteration

Thumma shaqaqna alarda shaqqan

And We split the earth in fragments,

English Translation

And caused to grow within it grain

English Transliteration

Faanbatna feeha habban

And produce therein corn,

English Translation

And grapes and herbage

English Transliteration

WaAAinaban waqadban

And Grapes and nutritious plants,

English Translation

And olive and palm trees

English Transliteration

Wazaytoonan wanakhlan

And Olives and Dates,

English Translation

And gardens of dense shrubbery

English Transliteration

Wahadaiqa ghulban

And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees,

English Translation

And fruit and grass -

English Transliteration

Wafakihatan waabban

And fruits and fodder,-

English Translation

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

English Transliteration

MataAAan lakum walianAAamikum

For use and convenience to you and your cattle.

English Translation

But when there comes the Deafening Blast

English Transliteration

Faitha jaati alssakhkhatu

At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,-

English Translation

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

English Transliteration

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi

That Day shall a man flee from his own brother,

English Translation

And his mother and his father

English Transliteration

Waommihi waabeehi

And from his mother and his father,

English Translation

And his wife and his children,

English Transliteration

Wasahibatihi wabaneehi

And from his wife and his children.

English Translation

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

English Transliteration

Likulli imriin minhum yawmaithin shanun yughneehi

Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.

English Translation

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

English Transliteration

Wujoohun yawmaithin musfiratun

Some faces that Day will be beaming,

English Translation

Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

English Transliteration

Dahikatun mustabshiratun

Laughing, rejoicing.

English Translation

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

English Transliteration

Wawujoohun yawmaithin AAalayha ghabaratun

And other faces that Day will be dust-stained,

English Translation

Blackness will cover them.

English Transliteration

Tarhaquha qataratun

Blackness will cover them:

English Translation

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.

English Transliteration

Olaika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu

Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity.
