عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ﴿1﴾ أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ ﴿2﴾ وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ ﴿3﴾ أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ ﴿4﴾ أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ﴿5﴾ فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ ﴿6﴾ وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ﴿7﴾ وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ ﴿8﴾ وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ﴿9﴾ فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ﴿10﴾ كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ﴿11﴾ فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ﴿12﴾ فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ ﴿13﴾ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ ﴿14﴾ بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ ﴿15﴾ كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ ﴿16﴾ قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ ﴿17﴾ مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ﴿18﴾ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ ﴿19﴾ ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ ﴿20﴾ ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ ﴿21﴾ ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ ﴿22﴾ كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ ﴿23﴾ فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ ﴿24﴾ أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا ﴿25﴾ ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا ﴿26﴾ فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا ﴿27﴾ وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا ﴿28﴾ وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا ﴿29﴾ وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا ﴿30﴾ وَفَٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا ﴿31﴾ مَّتَٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ ﴿32﴾ فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ ﴿33﴾ يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ ﴿34﴾ وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ ﴿35﴾ وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ ﴿36﴾ لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ ﴿37﴾ وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ ﴿38﴾ ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ ﴿39﴾ وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ ﴿40﴾ تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ﴿41﴾ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ ﴿42﴾

Tafsir of Surah Abasa (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ﴿1﴾

English Translation

The Prophet frowned and turned away (1)

English Transliteration

AAabasa watawalla (1)

Tafsir of Verse 1

(The Prophet) frowned and turned away, (1)

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ ﴿2﴾

English Translation

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. (2)

English Transliteration

An jaahu alaAAma (2)

Tafsir of Verse 2

Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). (2)

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ ﴿3﴾

English Translation

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified (3)

English Transliteration

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka (3)

Tafsir of Verse 3

But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- (3)

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ ﴿4﴾

English Translation

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? (4)

English Transliteration

Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra (4)

Tafsir of Verse 4

Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? (4)

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ﴿5﴾

English Translation

As for he who thinks himself without need, (5)

English Transliteration

Amma mani istaghna (5)

Tafsir of Verse 5

As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, (5)

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ ﴿6﴾

English Translation

To him you give attention. (6)

English Transliteration

Faanta lahu tasadda (6)

Tafsir of Verse 6

To him dost thou attend; (6)

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ﴿7﴾

English Translation

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. (7)

English Transliteration

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka (7)

Tafsir of Verse 7

Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). (7)

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ ﴿8﴾

English Translation

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] (8)

English Transliteration

Waamma man jaaka yasAAa (8)

Tafsir of Verse 8

But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, (8)

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ﴿9﴾

English Translation

While he fears [Allah], (9)

English Transliteration

Wahuwa yakhsha (9)

Tafsir of Verse 9

And with fear (in his heart), (9)

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ﴿10﴾

English Translation

From him you are distracted. (10)

English Transliteration

Faanta AAanhu talahha (10)

Tafsir of Verse 10

Of him wast thou unmindful. (10)

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ﴿11﴾

English Translation

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; (11)

English Transliteration

Kalla innaha tathkiratun (11)

Tafsir of Verse 11

By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: (11)

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ﴿12﴾

English Translation

So whoever wills may remember it. (12)

English Transliteration

Faman shaa thakarahu (12)

Tafsir of Verse 12

Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. (12)

فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ ﴿13﴾

English Translation

[It is recorded] in honored sheets, (13)

English Transliteration

Fee suhufin mukarramatin (13)

Tafsir of Verse 13

(It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, (13)

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ ﴿14﴾

English Translation

Exalted and purified, (14)

English Transliteration

MarfooAAatin mutahharatin (14)

Tafsir of Verse 14

Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, (14)

بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ ﴿15﴾

English Translation

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, (15)

English Transliteration

Biaydee safaratin (15)

Tafsir of Verse 15

(Written) by the hands of scribes- (15)

كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ ﴿16﴾

English Translation

Noble and dutiful. (16)

English Transliteration

Kiramin bararatin (16)

Tafsir of Verse 16

Honourable and Pious and Just. (16)

قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ ﴿17﴾

English Translation

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. (17)

English Transliteration

Qutila alinsanu ma akfarahu (17)

Tafsir of Verse 17

Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; (17)

مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ﴿18﴾

English Translation

From what substance did He create him? (18)

English Transliteration

Min ayyi shayin khalaqahu (18)

Tafsir of Verse 18

From what stuff hath He created him? (18)

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ ﴿19﴾

English Translation

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; (19)

English Transliteration

Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu (19)

Tafsir of Verse 19

From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; (19)

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ ﴿20﴾

English Translation

Then He eased the way for him; (20)

English Transliteration

Thumma alssabeela yassarahu (20)

Tafsir of Verse 20

Then doth He make His path smooth for him; (20)

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ ﴿21﴾

English Translation

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. (21)

English Transliteration

Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu (21)

Tafsir of Verse 21

Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; (21)

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ ﴿22﴾

English Translation

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. (22)

English Transliteration

Thumma itha shaa ansharahu (22)

Tafsir of Verse 22

Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). (22)

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ ﴿23﴾

English Translation

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. (23)

English Transliteration

Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu (23)

Tafsir of Verse 23

By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. (23)

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ ﴿24﴾

English Translation

Then let mankind look at his food - (24)

English Transliteration

Falyanthuri alinsanu ila taAAamihi (24)

Tafsir of Verse 24

Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): (24)

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا ﴿25﴾

English Translation

How We poured down water in torrents, (25)

English Transliteration

Anna sababna almaa sabban (25)

Tafsir of Verse 25

For that We pour forth water in abundance, (25)

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا ﴿26﴾

English Translation

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], (26)

English Transliteration

Thumma shaqaqna alarda shaqqan (26)

Tafsir of Verse 26

And We split the earth in fragments, (26)

فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا ﴿27﴾

English Translation

And caused to grow within it grain (27)

English Transliteration

Faanbatna feeha habban (27)

Tafsir of Verse 27

And produce therein corn, (27)

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا ﴿28﴾

English Translation

And grapes and herbage (28)

English Transliteration

WaAAinaban waqadban (28)

Tafsir of Verse 28

And Grapes and nutritious plants, (28)

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا ﴿29﴾

English Translation

And olive and palm trees (29)

English Transliteration

Wazaytoonan wanakhlan (29)

Tafsir of Verse 29

And Olives and Dates, (29)

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا ﴿30﴾

English Translation

And gardens of dense shrubbery (30)

English Transliteration

Wahadaiqa ghulban (30)

Tafsir of Verse 30

And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, (30)

وَفَٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا ﴿31﴾

English Translation

And fruit and grass - (31)

English Transliteration

Wafakihatan waabban (31)

Tafsir of Verse 31

And fruits and fodder,- (31)

مَّتَٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ ﴿32﴾

English Translation

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. (32)

English Transliteration

MataAAan lakum walianAAamikum (32)

Tafsir of Verse 32

For use and convenience to you and your cattle. (32)

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ ﴿33﴾

English Translation

But when there comes the Deafening Blast (33)

English Transliteration

Faitha jaati alssakhkhatu (33)

Tafsir of Verse 33

At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- (33)

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ ﴿34﴾

English Translation

On the Day a man will flee from his brother (34)

English Transliteration

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi (34)

Tafsir of Verse 34

That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, (34)

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ ﴿35﴾

English Translation

And his mother and his father (35)

English Transliteration

Waommihi waabeehi (35)

Tafsir of Verse 35

And from his mother and his father, (35)

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ ﴿36﴾

English Translation

And his wife and his children, (36)

English Transliteration

Wasahibatihi wabaneehi (36)

Tafsir of Verse 36

And from his wife and his children. (36)

لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ ﴿37﴾

English Translation

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. (37)

English Transliteration

Likulli imriin minhum yawmaithin shanun yughneehi (37)

Tafsir of Verse 37

Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. (37)

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ ﴿38﴾

English Translation

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - (38)

English Transliteration

Wujoohun yawmaithin musfiratun (38)

Tafsir of Verse 38

Some faces that Day will be beaming, (38)

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ ﴿39﴾

English Translation

Laughing, rejoicing at good news. (39)

English Transliteration

Dahikatun mustabshiratun (39)

Tafsir of Verse 39

Laughing, rejoicing. (39)

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ ﴿40﴾

English Translation

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. (40)

English Transliteration

Wawujoohun yawmaithin AAalayha ghabaratun (40)

Tafsir of Verse 40

And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, (40)

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ﴿41﴾

English Translation

Blackness will cover them. (41)

English Transliteration

Tarhaquha qataratun (41)

Tafsir of Verse 41

Blackness will cover them: (41)

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ ﴿42﴾

English Translation

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. (42)

English Transliteration

Olaika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu (42)

Tafsir of Verse 42

Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. (42)
