Surah Muhammad
سُورَةُ مُحَمَّدٍ
Page 509 (Verses from 20 to 29)
وَيَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَوْلَا نُزِّلَتْ سُورَةٌ ۖ فَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ مُّحْكَمَةٌ وَذُكِرَ فِيهَا ٱلْقِتَالُ ۙ رَأَيْتَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ نَظَرَ ٱلْمَغْشِىِّ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۖ فَأَوْلَىٰ لَهُمْ
طَاعَةٌ وَقَوْلٌ مَّعْرُوفٌ ۚ فَإِذَا عَزَمَ ٱلْأَمْرُ فَلَوْ صَدَقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ
فَهَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ أَن تُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوٓا۟ أَرْحَامَكُمْ
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فَأَصَمَّهُمْ وَأَعْمَىٰٓ أَبْصَٰرَهُمْ
أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ أَمْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَآ
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱرْتَدُّوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَدْبَٰرِهِم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلْهُدَى ۙ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ سَوَّلَ لَهُمْ وَأَمْلَىٰ لَهُمْ
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا۟ لِلَّذِينَ كَرِهُوا۟ مَا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ سَنُطِيعُكُمْ فِى بَعْضِ ٱلْأَمْرِ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِسْرَارَهُمْ
فَكَيْفَ إِذَا تَوَفَّتْهُمُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَضْرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَدْبَٰرَهُمْ
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ ٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَآ أَسْخَطَ ٱللَّهَ وَكَرِهُوا۟ رِضْوَٰنَهُۥ فَأَحْبَطَ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ
أَمْ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ أَن لَّن يُخْرِجَ ٱللَّهُ أَضْغَٰنَهُمْ

Tafsir of Surah Muhammad (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)
English Translation
Those who believe say, "Why has a surah not been sent down? But when a precise surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is hypocrisy looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them [would have been]English Transliteration
Wayaqoolu allatheena amanoo lawla nuzzilat sooratun faitha onzilat sooratun muhkamatun wathukira feeha alqitalu raayta allatheena fee quloobihim maradun yanthuroona ilayka nathara almaghshiyyi AAalayhi mina almawti faawla lahum
Those who believe say, 'Why has a sura not been sent down?' Then, when a clear sura is sent down, and therein fighting is mentioned, thou seest those in whose hearts is sickness looking at thee as one who swoons of death; but better for them would be
English Translation
Obedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allah, it would have been better for them.English Transliteration
TaAAatun waqawlun maAAroofun faitha AAazama alamru falaw sadaqoo Allaha lakana khayran lahum
obedience, and words honourable. Then, when the matter is resolved, if they were true to God, it would be better for them.
English Translation
So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship?English Transliteration
Fahal AAasaytum in tawallaytum an tufsidoo fee alardi watuqattiAAoo arhamakum
If you turned away, would you then haply work corruption in the land, and break your bonds of kin?
English Translation
Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.English Transliteration
Olaika allatheena laAAanahumu Allahu faasammahum waaAAma absarahum
Those are they whom God has cursed, and so made them deaf, and blinded their eyes.
English Translation
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur\'an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?English Transliteration
Afala yatadabbaroona alqurana am AAala quloobin aqfaluha
What, do they not ponder the Koran? Or is it that there are locks upon their hearts?
English Translation
Indeed, those who reverted back [to disbelief] after guidance had become clear to them - Satan enticed them and prolonged hope for them.English Transliteration
Inna allatheena irtaddoo AAala adbarihim min baAAdi ma tabayyana lahumu alhuda alshshaytanu sawwala lahum waamla lahum
Those who have turned back in their traces after the guidance has become clear to them, Satan it was that tempted them, and God respited them.
English Translation
That is because they said to those who disliked what Allah sent down, "We will obey you in part of the matter." And Allah knows what they conceal.English Transliteration
Thalika biannahum qaloo lillatheena karihoo ma nazzala Allahu sanuteeAAukum fee baAAdi alamri waAllahu yaAAlamu israrahum
That is because they said to those who were averse to what God sent down, 'We will obey you in some of the affair'; and God knows their secrets.
English Translation
Then how [will it be] when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs?English Transliteration
Fakayfa itha tawaffathumu almalaikatu yadriboona wujoohahum waadbarahum
How shall it be, when the angels take them, beating their faces and their backs?
English Translation
That is because they followed what angered Allah and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds.English Transliteration
Thalika biannahumu ittabaAAoo ma askhata Allaha wakarihoo ridwanahu faahbata aAAmalahum
That is because they have followed what angers God, and have been averse to His good pleasure, so He has made their works to fail.
English Translation
Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allah would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?English Transliteration
Am hasiba allatheena fee quloobihim maradun an lan yukhrija Allahu adghanahum
Or did those in whose hearts is sickness think that God would not bring to light their rancour?
