Surah Al-Hijr
سُورَةُ الحِجۡرِ
Page 265 (Verses from 52 to 70)
إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ
قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ
قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ
قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَٰنِطِينَ
قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ
إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ
فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ
قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ
قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ
وَأَتَيْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَٰدِقُونَ
فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ
وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُّصْبِحِينَ
وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ
قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ
قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Tafsir of Surah Al-Hijr (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)
English Translation
When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful of you."English Transliteration
Ith dakhaloo AAalayhi faqaloo salaman qala inna minkum wajiloona
When they entered his presence and said, "Peace!" He said, "We feel afraid of you!"
English Translation
[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."English Transliteration
Qaloo la tawjal inna nubashshiruka bighulamin AAaleemin
They said: "Fear not! We give thee glad tidings of a son endowed with wisdom."
English Translation
He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"English Transliteration
Qala abashshartumoonee AAala an massaniya alkibaru fabima tubashshirooni
He said: "Do ye give me glad tidings that old age has seized me? Of what, then, is your good news?"
English Translation
They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."English Transliteration
Qaloo bashsharnaka bialhaqqi fala takun mina alqaniteena
They said: "We give thee glad tidings in truth: be not then in despair!"
English Translation
He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"English Transliteration
Qala waman yaqnatu min rahmati rabbihi illa alddalloona
He said: "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord, but such as go astray?"
English Translation
[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"English Transliteration
Qala fama khatbukum ayyuha almursaloona
Abraham said: "What then is the business on which ye (have come), O ye messengers (of Allah)?"
English Translation
They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,English Transliteration
Qaloo inna orsilna ila qawmin mujrimeena
They said: "We have been sent to a people (deep) in sin,
English Translation
Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them allEnglish Transliteration
Illa ala lootin inna lamunajjoohum ajmaAAeena
"Excepting the adherents of Lut: them we are certainly (charged) to save (from harm),- All -
English Translation
Except his wife." Allah decreed that she is of those who remain behind.English Transliteration
Illa imraatahu qaddarna innaha lamina alghabireena
"Except his wife, who, We have ascertained, will be among those who will lag behind."
English Translation
And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,English Transliteration
Falamma jaa ala lootin almursaloona
At length when the messengers arrived among the adherents of Lut,
English Translation
He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."English Transliteration
Qala innakum qawmun munkaroona
He said: "Ye appear to be uncommon folk."
English Translation
They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,English Transliteration
Qaloo bal jinaka bima kanoo feehi yamtaroona
They said: "Yea, we have come to thee to accomplish that of which they doubt.
English Translation
And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.English Transliteration
Waataynaka bialhaqqi wainna lasadiqoona
"We have brought to thee that which is inevitably due, and assuredly we tell the truth.
English Translation
So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."English Transliteration
Faasri biahlika biqitAAin mina allayli waittabiAA adbarahum wala yaltafit minkum ahadun waimdoo haythu tumaroona
"Then travel by night with thy household, when a portion of the night (yet remains), and do thou bring up the rear: let no one amongst you look back, but pass on whither ye are ordered."
English Translation
And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.English Transliteration
Waqadayna ilayhi thalika alamra anna dabira haolai maqtooAAun musbiheena
And We made known this decree to him, that the last remnants of those (sinners) should be cut off by the morning.
English Translation
And the people of the city came rejoicing.English Transliteration
Wajaa ahlu almadeenati yastabshiroona
The inhabitants of the city came in (mad) joy (at news of the young men).
English Translation
[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.English Transliteration
Qala inna haolai dayfee fala tafdahooni
Lut said: "These are my guests: disgrace me not:
English Translation
And fear Allah and do not disgrace me."English Transliteration
Waittaqoo Allaha wala tukhzooni
"But fear Allah, and shame me not."
English Translation
They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"English Transliteration
Qaloo awalam nanhaka AAani alAAalameena
They said: "Did we not forbid thee (to speak) for all and sundry?"
