أَفَسِحْرٌ هَٰذَآ أَمْ أَنتُمْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ ٱصْلَوْهَا فَٱصْبِرُوٓا۟ أَوْ لَا تَصْبِرُوا۟ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ إِنَّمَا تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَنَعِيمٍ فَٰكِهِينَ بِمَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ وَوَقَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلْجَحِيمِ كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ هَنِيٓـًٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّصْفُوفَةٍ ۖ وَزَوَّجْنَٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٍ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعَتْهُمْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُم بِإِيمَٰنٍ أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَمَآ أَلَتْنَٰهُم مِّنْ عَمَلِهِم مِّن شَىْءٍ ۚ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٌ وَأَمْدَدْنَٰهُم بِفَٰكِهَةٍ وَلَحْمٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ يَتَنَٰزَعُونَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا لَّا لَغْوٌ فِيهَا وَلَا تَأْثِيمٌ ۞ وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ غِلْمَانٌ لَّهُمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لُؤْلُؤٌ مَّكْنُونٌ وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِىٓ أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا وَوَقَىٰنَا عَذَابَ ٱلسَّمُومِ إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْبَرُّ ٱلرَّحِيمُ فَذَكِّرْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَتِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٍ وَلَا مَجْنُونٍ أَمْ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٌ نَّتَرَبَّصُ بِهِۦ رَيْبَ ٱلْمَنُونِ قُلْ تَرَبَّصُوا۟ فَإِنِّى مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُتَرَبِّصِينَ

Tafsir of Surah At-Tur (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

English Translation

Then is this magic, or do you not see?

English Transliteration

Afasihrun hatha am antum la tubsiroona

What, is this magic, or is it you that do not see?

English Translation

[Enter to] burn therein; then be patient or impatient - it is all the same for you. You are only being recompensed [for] what you used to do."

English Transliteration

Islawha faisbiroo aw la tasbiroo sawaon AAalaykum innama tujzawna ma kuntum taAAmaloona

Roast in it! And bear you patiently, or bear not patiently, equal it is to you; you are only being recompensed for that you were working.'

English Translation

Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and pleasure,

English Transliteration

Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatin wanaAAeemin

Surely the godfearing shall be in gardens and bliss,

English Translation

Enjoying what their Lord has given them, and their Lord protected them from the punishment of Hellfire.

English Transliteration

Fakiheena bima atahum rabbuhum wawaqahum rabbuhum AAathaba aljaheemi

rejoicing in that their Lord has given them; and their Lord shall guard them against the chastisement of Hell.

English Translation

[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."

English Transliteration

Kuloo waishraboo haneean bima kuntum taAAmaloona

'Eat and drink, with wholesome appetite, for that you were working.

English Translation

They will be reclining on thrones lined up, and We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.

English Transliteration

Muttakieena AAala sururin masfoofatin wazawwajnahum bihoorin AAeenin

Reclining upon couches ranged in rows; and We shall espouse them to wide-eyed houris.

English Translation

And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith - We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained.

English Transliteration

Waallatheena amanoo waittabaAAathum thurriyyatuhum bieemanin alhaqna bihim thurriyyatahum wama alatnahum min AAamalihim min shayin kullu imriin bima kasaba raheenun

And those who believed, and their seed followed them in belief, We shall join their seed with them, and We shall not defraud them of aught of their work; every man shall be pledged for what he earned.

English Translation

And We will provide them with fruit and meat from whatever they desire.

English Transliteration

Waamdadnahum bifakihatin walahmin mimma yashtahoona

And We shall succour them with fruits and flesh such as they desire

English Translation

They will exchange with one another a cup [of wine] wherein [results] no ill speech or commission of sin.

English Transliteration

YatanazaAAoona feeha kasan la laghwun feeha wala tatheemun

while they pass therein a cup one to another wherein is no idle talk, no cause of sin,

English Translation

There will circulate among them [servant] boys [especially] for them, as if they were pearls well-protected.

English Transliteration

Wayatoofu AAalayhim ghilmanun lahum kaannahum luluon maknoonun

and there go round them youths, their own, as if they were hidden pearls.

English Translation

And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

English Transliteration

Waaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatasaaloona

They advance one upon another, asking each other questions.

English Translation

They will say, "Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful [of displeasing Allah].

English Transliteration

Qaloo inna kunna qablu fee ahlina mushfiqeena

They say, 'We were before among our people, ever going in fear,

English Translation

So Allah conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire.

English Transliteration

Famanna Allahu AAalayna wawaqana AAathaba alssamoomi

and God was gracious to us, and guarded us against the chastisement of the burning wind;

English Translation

Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful."

English Transliteration

Inna kunna min qablu nadAAoohu innahu huwa albarru alrraheemu

we were before ever calling upon Him; surely He is the All-benign, the All-compassionate.'

English Translation

So remind [O Muhammad], for you are not, by the favor of your Lord, a soothsayer or a madman.

English Transliteration

Fathakkir fama anta biniAAmati rabbika bikahin wala majnoonin

Therefore remind! by thy Lord's blessing thou art not a soothsayer neither possessed.

English Translation

Or do they say [of you], "A poet for whom we await a misfortune of time?"

English Transliteration

Am yaqooloona shaAAirun natarabbasu bihi rayba almanooni

Or do they say, 'He is a poet for whom we await Fate's uncertainty'?

English Translation

Say, "Wait, for indeed I am, with you, among the waiters."

English Transliteration

Qul tarabbasoo fainnee maAAakum mina almutarabbiseena

Say: 'Await! I shall be awaiting with you.'
