كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بَاسِرَةٌ تَظُنُّ أَن يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِىَ وَقِيلَ مَنْ ۜ رَاقٍ وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلْفِرَاقُ وَٱلْتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمَسَاقُ فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰ ثُمَّ أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰٓ أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتْرَكَ سُدًى أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِّن مَّنِىٍّ يُمْنَىٰ ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ أَلَيْسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يُحْۦِىَ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ

Tafsir of Surah Al-Qiyaama (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

English Translation

No! But you love the immediate

English Transliteration

Kalla bal tuhibboona alAAajilata

Nay, (ye men!) but ye love the fleeting life,

English Translation

And leave the Hereafter.

English Transliteration

Watatharoona alakhirata

And leave alone the Hereafter.

English Translation

[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,

English Transliteration

Wujoohun yawmaithin nadiratun

Some faces, that Day, will beam (in brightness and beauty);-

English Translation

Looking at their Lord.

English Transliteration

Ila rabbiha nathiratun

Looking towards their Lord;

English Translation

And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,

English Transliteration

Wawujoohun yawmaithin basiratun

And some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal,

English Translation

Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.

English Transliteration

Tathunnu an yufAAala biha faqiratun

In the thought that some back-breaking calamity was about to be inflicted on them;

English Translation

No! When the soul has reached the collar bones

English Transliteration

Kalla itha balaghati alttaraqiya

Yea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar-bone (in its exit),

English Translation

And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"

English Transliteration

Waqeela man raqin

And there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?"

English Translation

And the dying one is certain that it is the [time of] separation

English Transliteration

Wathanna annahu alfiraqu

And he will conclude that it was (the Time) of Parting;

English Translation

And the leg is wound about the leg,

English Transliteration

Wailtaffati alssaqu bialssaqi

And one leg will be joined with another:

English Translation

To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.

English Transliteration

Ila rabbika yawmaithin almasaqu

That Day the Drive will be (all) to thy Lord!

English Translation

And the disbeliever had not believed, nor had he prayed.

English Transliteration

Fala saddaqa wala salla

So he gave nothing in charity, nor did he pray!-

English Translation

But [instead], he denied and turned away.

English Transliteration

Walakin kaththaba watawalla

But on the contrary, he rejected Truth and turned away!

English Translation

And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].

English Transliteration

Thumma thahaba ila ahlihi yatamatta

Then did he stalk to his family in full conceit!

English Translation

Woe to you, and woe!

English Transliteration

Awla laka faawla

Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!

English Translation

Then woe to you, and woe!

English Transliteration

Thumma awla laka faawla

Again, Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!

English Translation

Does man think that he will be left neglected?

English Transliteration

Ayahsabu alinsanu an yutraka sudan

Does man think that he will be left uncontrolled, (without purpose)?

English Translation

Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?

English Transliteration

Alam yaku nutfatan min manayyin yumna

Was he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)?

English Translation

Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allah] created [his form] and proportioned [him]

English Transliteration

Thumma kana AAalaqatan fakhalaqa fasawwa

Then did he become a leech-like clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion.

English Translation

And made of him two mates, the male and the female.

English Transliteration

FajaAAala minhu alzzawjayni alththakara waalontha

And of him He made two sexes, male and female.

English Translation

Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?

English Transliteration

Alaysa thalika biqadirin AAala an yuhyiya almawta

Has not He, (the same), the power to give life to the dead?
