Surah Ash-Shu'araa
سُورَةُ الشُّعَرَاءِ
Page 375 (Verses from 184 to 206)
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلْجِبِلَّةَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ
وَمَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ
فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
قَالَ رَبِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلْأَمِينُ
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنذِرِينَ
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِىٍّ مُّبِينٍ
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِى زُبُرِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
أَوَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُمْ ءَايَةً أَن يَعْلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَٰٓؤُا۟ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضِ ٱلْأَعْجَمِينَ
فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَيْهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنِينَ
كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَٰهُ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ
فَيَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
فَيَقُولُوا۟ هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنظَرُونَ
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ
أَفَرَءَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَٰهُمْ سِنِينَ
ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ

Listen to Surah Ash-Shu'araa (Arabic and English translation)
Tafsir of Surah Ash-Shu'araa (Yusuf Ali: Abdullah Yusuf Ali)
English Translation
And fear He who created you and the former creation."English Transliteration
Waittaqoo allathee khalaqakum waaljibillata alawwaleena
"And fear Him Who created you and (who created) the generations before (you)"
English Translation
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.English Transliteration
Qaloo innama anta mina almusahhareena
They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!
English Translation
You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.English Transliteration
Wama anta illa basharun mithluna wain nathunnuka lamina alkathibeena
"Thou art no more than a mortal like us, and indeed we think thou art a liar!
English Translation
So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."English Transliteration
Faasqit AAalayna kisafan mina alssamai in kunta mina alssadiqeena
"Now cause a piece of the sky to fall on us, if thou art truthful!"
English Translation
He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."English Transliteration
Qala rabbee aAAlamu bima taAAmaloona
He said: "My Lord knows best what ye do."
English Translation
And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.English Transliteration
Fakaththaboohu faakhathahum AAathabu yawmi alththullati innahu kana AAathaba yawmin AAatheemin
But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day.
English Translation
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.English Transliteration
Inna fee thalika laayatan wama kana aktharuhum mumineena
Verily in that is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
English Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.English Transliteration
Wainna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu alrraheemu
And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
English Translation
And indeed, the Qur\'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.English Transliteration
Wainnahu latanzeelu rabbi alAAalameena
Verily this is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds:
English Translation
The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it downEnglish Transliteration
Nazala bihi alrroohu alameenu
With it came down the spirit of Faith and Truth-
English Translation
Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners -English Transliteration
AAala qalbika litakoona mina almunthireena
To thy heart and mind, that thou mayest admonish.
English Translation
In a clear Arabic language.English Transliteration
Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin
In the perspicuous Arabic tongue.
English Translation
And indeed, it is [mentioned] in the scriptures of former peoples.English Transliteration
Wainnahu lafee zuburi alawwaleena
Without doubt it is (announced) in the mystic Books of former peoples.
English Translation
And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?English Transliteration
Awalam yakun lahum ayatan an yaAAlamahu AAulamao banee israeela
Is it not a Sign to them that the Learned of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)?
English Translation
And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreignersEnglish Transliteration
Walaw nazzalnahu AAala baAAdi alaAAjameena
Had We revealed it to any of the non-Arabs,
English Translation
And he had recited it to them [perfectly], they would [still] not have been believers in it.English Transliteration
Faqaraahu AAalayhim ma kanoo bihi mumineena
And had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.
English Translation
Thus have We inserted disbelief into the hearts of the criminals.English Transliteration
Kathalika salaknahu fee quloobi almujrimeena
Thus have We caused it to enter the hearts of the sinners.
English Translation
They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.English Transliteration
La yuminoona bihi hatta yarawoo alAAathaba alaleema
They will not believe in it until they see the grievous Penalty;
English Translation
And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.English Transliteration
Fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum la yashAAuroona
But the (Penalty) will come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not;
English Translation
And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"English Transliteration
Fayaqooloo hal nahnu muntharoona
Then they will say: "Shall we be respited?"
English Translation
So for Our punishment are they impatient?English Transliteration
AfabiAAathabina yastaAAjiloona
Do they then ask for Our Penalty to be hastened on?
English Translation
Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for yearsEnglish Transliteration
Afaraayta in mattaAAnahum sineena
Seest thou? If We do let them enjoy (this life) for a few years,
English Translation
And then there came to them that which they were promised?English Transliteration
Thumma jaahum ma kanoo yooAAadoona
Yet there comes to them at length the (Punishment) which they were promised!
