Surah Ash-Shu'araa
سُورَةُ الشُّعَرَاءِ
Page 373 (Verses from 137 to 159)
إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ صَٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
أَتُتْرَكُونَ فِى مَا هَٰهُنَآ ءَامِنِينَ
فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
وَزُرُوعٍ وَنَخْلٍ طَلْعُهَا هَضِيمٌ
وَتَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا فَٰرِهِينَ
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
وَلَا تُطِيعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ
ٱلَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ
مَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
قَالَ هَٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةٌ لَّهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ نَٰدِمِينَ
فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Tafsir of Surah Ash-Shu'araa (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)
English Translation
This is not but the custom of the former peoples,English Transliteration
In hatha illa khuluqu alawwaleena
this is nothing but the habit of the ancients,
English Translation
And we are not to be punished."English Transliteration
Wama nahnu bimuAAaththabeena
and we shall not be chastised.'
English Translation
And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.English Transliteration
Fakaththaboohu faahlaknahum inna fee thalika laayatan wama kana aktharuhum mumineena
So they cried him lies; then We destroyed them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers.
English Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.English Transliteration
Wainna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu alrraheemu
Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate.
English Translation
Thamud denied the messengersEnglish Transliteration
Kaththabat thamoodu almursaleena
Thamood cried lies to the Envoys
English Translation
When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?English Transliteration
Ith qala lahum akhoohum salihun ala tattaqoona
when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing?
English Translation
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.English Transliteration
Innee lakum rasoolun ameenun
I am for you a faithful Messenger,
English Translation
So fear Allah and obey me.English Transliteration
Faittaqoo Allaha waateeAAooni
so fear you God, and obey you me.'
English Translation
And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.English Transliteration
Wama asalukum AAalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illa AAala rabbi alAAalameena
'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being.
English Translation
Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death],English Transliteration
Atutrakoona fee ma hahuna amineena
Will you be left secure in this here,
English Translation
Within gardens and springsEnglish Transliteration
Fee jannatin waAAuyoonin
among gardens and fountains,
English Translation
And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit?English Transliteration
WazurooAAin wanakhlin talAAuha hadeemun
sown fields, and palms with slender spathes?
English Translation
And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.English Transliteration
Watanhitoona mina aljibali buyootan fariheena
Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains?
English Translation
So fear Allah and obey me.English Transliteration
Faittaqoo Allaha waateeAAooni
So fear you God, and obey you me;
English Translation
And do not obey the order of the transgressors,English Transliteration
Wala tuteeAAoo amra almusrifeena
and obey not the commandment of the prodigal
English Translation
Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."English Transliteration
Allatheena yufsidoona fee alardi wala yuslihoona
who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.'
English Translation
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.English Transliteration
Qaloo innama anta mina almusahhareena
They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched;
English Translation
You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."English Transliteration
Ma anta illa basharun mithluna fati biayatin in kunta mina alssadiqeena
thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.'
English Translation
He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.English Transliteration
Qala hathihi naqatun laha shirbun walakum shirbu yawmin maAAloomin
He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed,
English Translation
And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."English Transliteration
Wala tamassooha bisooin fayakhuthakum AAathabu yawmin AAatheemin
and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.'
English Translation
But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.English Transliteration
FaAAaqarooha faasbahoo nadimeena
But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful,
English Translation
And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.English Transliteration
Faakhathahumu alAAathabu inna fee thalika laayatan wama kana aktharuhum mumineena
and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers.
English Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.English Transliteration
