وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم بِسُلْطَٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ وَإِنِّى عُذْتُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ لِى فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌ مُّجْرِمُونَ فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِى لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ وَٱتْرُكِ ٱلْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ كَمْ تَرَكُوا۟ مِن جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا۟ فِيهَا فَٰكِهِينَ كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَوْرَثْنَٰهَا قَوْمًا ءَاخَرِينَ فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنظَرِينَ وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْمُهِينِ مِن فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ وَلَقَدِ ٱخْتَرْنَٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَٰٓؤٌا۟ مُّبِينٌ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَيَقُولُونَ إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ فَأْتُوا۟ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ أَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَٰعِبِينَ مَا خَلَقْنَٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

Listen to Surah Ad-Dukhaan (Arabic and English translation)

Tafsir of Surah Ad-Dukhaan (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم بِسُلْطَٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ

English Translation

And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority.

English Transliteration

Waan la taAAloo AAala Allahi innee ateekum bisultanin mubeenin

and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority,
وَإِنِّى عُذْتُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ

English Translation

And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.

English Transliteration

Wainnee AAuthtu birabbee warabbikum an tarjumooni

and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me.
وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ لِى فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ

English Translation

But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."

English Transliteration

Wain lam tuminoo lee faiAAtazilooni

'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!'
فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌ مُّجْرِمُونَ

English Translation

And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.

English Transliteration

FadaAAa rabbahu anna haolai qawmun mujrimoona

And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.'
فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِى لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ

English Translation

[Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.

English Transliteration

Faasri biAAibadee laylan innakum muttabaAAoona

'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed.
وَٱتْرُكِ ٱلْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ

English Translation

And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."

English Transliteration

Waotruki albahra rahwan innahum jundun mughraqoona

And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.'
كَمْ تَرَكُوا۟ مِن جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

English Translation

How much they left behind of gardens and springs

English Transliteration

Kam tarakoo min jannatin waAAuyoonin

They left how many gardens and fountains,
وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ

English Translation

And crops and noble sites

English Transliteration

WazurooAAin wamaqamin kareemin

sown fields, and how noble a station,
وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا۟ فِيهَا فَٰكِهِينَ

English Translation

And comfort wherein they were amused.

English Transliteration

WanaAAmatin kanoo feeha fakiheena

and what prosperity they had rejoiced in!
كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَوْرَثْنَٰهَا قَوْمًا ءَاخَرِينَ

English Translation

Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.

English Transliteration

Kathalika waawrathnaha qawman akhareena

Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people.
فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنظَرِينَ

English Translation

And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.

English Transliteration

Fama bakat AAalayhimu alssamao waalardu wama kanoo munthareena

Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited;
وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْمُهِينِ

English Translation

And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment -

English Transliteration

Walaqad najjayna banee israeela mina alAAathabi almuheeni

and We delivered the Children of Israel from the humbling chastisement,
مِن فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ

English Translation

From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.

English Transliteration

Min firAAawna innahu kana AAaliyan mina almusrifeena

from Pharaoh; surely he was a high One, of the prodigals;
وَلَقَدِ ٱخْتَرْنَٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

English Translation

And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds.

English Transliteration

Walaqadi ikhtarnahum AAala AAilmin AAala alAAalameena

and We chose them, out of a knowledge, above all beings,
وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَٰٓؤٌا۟ مُّبِينٌ

English Translation

And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.

English Transliteration

Waataynahum mina alayati ma feehi balaon mubeenun

and gave them signs wherein there was a manifest trial.
إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَيَقُولُونَ

English Translation

Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,

English Transliteration

Inna haolai layaqooloona

These men do say,
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ

English Translation

"There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected.

English Transliteration

In hiya illa mawtatuna aloola wama nahnu bimunshareena

'There is nothing but our first death; we shall not be revived.
فَأْتُوا۟ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

English Translation

Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."

English Transliteration

Fatoo biabaina in kuntum sadiqeena

Bring us our fathers, if you speak truly!'
أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ أَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ

English Translation

Are they better or the people of Tubba\' and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.

English Transliteration

Ahum khayrun am qawmu tubbaAAin waallatheena min qablihim ahlaknahum innahum kanoo mujrimeena

Are they better, or the people of Tubba' and those before them whom We destroyed? They were surely sinners.
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَٰعِبِينَ

English Translation

And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.

English Transliteration

Wama khalaqna alssamawati waalarda wama baynahuma laAAibeena

We created not the heavens and earth, and all that between them is, in play;
مَا خَلَقْنَٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

English Translation

We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.

English Transliteration

Ma khalaqnahuma illa bialhaqqi walakinna aktharahum la yaAAlamoona

We created them not save in truth; but most of them know it not.
