۞ وَلَوْ رَحِمْنَٰهُمْ وَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِم مِّن ضُرٍّ لَّلَجُّوا۟ فِى طُغْيَٰنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَٰهُم بِٱلْعَذَابِ فَمَا ٱسْتَكَانُوا۟ لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا ذَا عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ إِذَا هُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى ذَرَأَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ وَلَهُ ٱخْتِلَٰفُ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ بَلْ قَالُوا۟ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ قَالُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا نَحْنُ وَءَابَآؤُنَا هَٰذَا مِن قَبْلُ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ قُل لِّمَنِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ قُلْ مَن رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ ٱلسَّبْعِ وَرَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ قُلْ مَنۢ بِيَدِهِۦ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَهُوَ يُجِيرُ وَلَا يُجَارُ عَلَيْهِ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ فَأَنَّىٰ تُسْحَرُونَ

Tafsir of Surah Al-Muminoon (Arberry: A. J. Arberry)

English Translation

And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.

English Transliteration

Walaw rahimnahum wakashafna ma bihim min durrin lalajjoo fee tughyanihim yaAAmahoona

Did We have mercy on them, and remove the affliction that is upon them, they would persist in their insolence wandering blindly.

English Translation

And We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus]

English Transliteration

Walaqad akhathnahum bialAAathabi fama istakanoo lirabbihim wama yatadarraAAoona

We already seized them with the chastisement, yet they abased not themselves to their Lord nor were they humble;

English Translation

Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.

English Transliteration

Hatta itha fatahna AAalayhim baban tha AAathabin shadeedin itha hum feehi mublisoona

until, when We open against them a door of terrible chastisement, lo, they are sore confounded at it.

English Translation

And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.

English Transliteration

Wahuwa allathee anshaa lakumu alssamAAa waalabsara waalafidata qaleelan ma tashkuroona

It is He who produced for you hearing, and eyes, and hearts; little thanks you show.

English Translation

And it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.

English Transliteration

Wahuwa allathee tharaakum fee alardi wailayhi tuhsharoona

It is He who scattered you in the earth, and to Him you shall be mustered.

English Translation

And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason?

English Transliteration

Wahuwa allathee yuhyee wayumeetu walahu ikhtilafu allayli waalnnahari afala taAAqiloona

It is He who gives life, and makes to die, and to Him belongs the alternation of night and day; what, will you not understand?

English Translation

Rather, they say like what the former peoples said.

English Transliteration

Bal qaloo mithla ma qala alawwaloona

Nay, but they said the like of what the ancients said.

English Translation

They said, "When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

English Transliteration

Qaloo aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamabAAoothoona

They said, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be indeed raised up?

English Translation

We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples."

English Transliteration

Laqad wuAAidna nahnu waabaona hatha min qablu in hatha illa asateeru alawwaleena

We and our fathers have been promised this before; this is naught but the fairy-tales of the ancients.'

English Translation

Say, [O Muhammad], "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?"

English Transliteration

Qul limani alardu waman feeha in kuntum taAAlamoona

Say: 'Whose is the earth, and whoso is in it, if you have knowledge?'

English Translation

They will say, "To Allah." Say, "Then will you not remember?"

English Transliteration

Sayaqooloona lillahi qul afala tathakkaroona

They will say, God's.' Say: 'Will you not then remember?'

English Translation

Say, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?"

English Transliteration

Qul man rabbu alssamawati alssabAAi warabbu alAAarshi alAAatheemi

Say: 'Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the mighty Throne?'

English Translation

They will say, "[They belong] to Allah." Say, "Then will you not fear Him?"

English Transliteration

Sayaqooloona lillahi qul afala tattaqoona

They will say, 'God's.' Say: 'Will you not then be godfearing?'

English Translation

Say, "In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?"

English Transliteration

Qul man biyadihi malakootu kulli shayin wahuwa yujeeru wala yujaru AAalayhi in kuntum taAAlamoona

Say: 'In whose hand is the dominion of everything, protecting and Himself unprotected, if you have knowledge?'

English Translation

They will say, "[All belongs] to Allah." Say, "Then how are you deluded?"

English Transliteration

Sayaqooloona lillahi qul faanna tusharoona

They will say, 'God's.' Say: 'How then are you bewitched?
